Paddle Out

STOP THE BLAST: A Paddle Out for the Future of Torquay’s Coastline

Torquay Paddle Out Protest

Some moments are bigger than the ocean itself.

This image captures one of those moments: a powerful paddle out in Torquay, where our local community came together to stand up for what matters most: our coastline, our ocean, and our future.

Surfers, paddlers, swimmers and ocean lovers flooded the water in peaceful protest against what would have been the largest seismic blasting proposal in history.

Why the Torquay Paddle Out Mattered

The proposed seismic blasting project threatened large areas of ocean off the Victorian coast, including waters near the Surf Coast.

If approved, the project would have involved:

  • Seismic airgun blasts louder than an atomic bomb

  • Fired every 10 seconds

  • 24 hours a day

  • For up to 400 consecutive days

All in the name of future fossil fuel exploration.

For a community deeply connected to the ocean, this wasn’t just an environmental issue, it was personal.

The Impact of Seismic Blasting on Marine Life

Scientific research has shown that seismic blasting can have devastating effects on marine ecosystems, including:

  • Habitat abandonment

  • Disruption to mating and feeding behaviours

  • Interference with communication, navigation and migration

  • Long-term stress impacts on whales, dolphins and other marine species

For a coastline known for its biodiversity, surf culture and deep respect for the sea, the risk was simply too great.

A Community United on the Water

What made this paddle out so special wasn’t just the scale, it was the unity.

From the air, the water filled with colour. Surfboards, paddleboards and people formed a living symbol of resistance and care.

A reminder that when coastal communities come together, their voice carries far beyond the shoreline.

Update: The Protest Worked

And here’s the part worth celebrating.

The seismic blasting project was abandoned.

A huge win for the Surf Coast, for marine life, and for community-led action. Proof that showing up matters, and that collective voices can create real change.

A Moment Worth Remembering

This paddle out is more than a protest, it’s a snapshot of who we are as a coastal community.
