The story behind Local Breaks
Hey, I’m Sam, the creative behind Local Breaks. I’ve called Geelong home since 2012 and have been completely captivated by the beach ever since. Whether it’s a quick dip after a long day, exploring the hidden gems of reefs and rock pools, or chasing waves at our world-class local breaks, the coast is where I find my inspiration.
Local Breaks is the result of my love for the beach and my passion for photography. Each piece I create is a unique coastal artwork that connects with our local coastlines, capturing the beauty of the Australian shores at their absolute best. The idea for Local Breaks came to life when I was planning decor for my new home. Over the past year, friends, family, and even strangers have admired my photos and asked if they were for sale—so here we are!
When you shop with Local Breaks, you’re not just buying a print—you’re supporting a passionate artist on their creative journey. Every purchase means the world to me and allows me to keep this wave rolling.
We are absolutely spoiled with some of the best local breaks in the world around the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula. Whilst it's hard to argue that Bells Beach is the best of the bunch, my favourite local break is Torquay Surf Beach. It's my closest break, so it's the one I most often visit, and it's where I learnt to surf.
Just over an hour from Geelong, Lorne is the perfect place for a day trip. Far enough from home that you feel like you've gotten away, but not so far that you spend all day in the car. Mind you, the drive is pretty awesome too, as you wind your way along the scenic Great Ocean Road. Some of Lorne's best attractions include the Beach, Erskine Falls, Teddy's Lookout, and Live Wire Park. Be sure to make a pit stop at the Lorne Hotel to enjoy lunch on the balcony with the friendly cockatoos.
It's a difficult choice, but it's hard to beat snorkelling in the rock pools at Point Lonsdale. The underwater universe is home to an abundance of sea-life, whilst the immersive environment helps you to switch off from the stresses of the day-to-day and head home feeling refreshed and recharged.
