Childers Cove: The Great Ocean Road Beach Most People Drive Past
I'll be honest. Most people who visit the Great Ocean Road never make it to Childers Cove. They stop at the 12 Apostles, maybe Port Campbell, and then they're back in the car heading east or west. And I get it. There's a lot to see out there. But Childers Cove is one of those places that quietly earns a spot in your memory the moment you walk down to it. No crowds. No tour buses. Just a small protected bay with golden limestone cliffs and water that goes from deep blue to clear green depending on the angle of the sun.
I've shot at Childers Cove a few times now and every time I'm genuinely surprised I have it almost to myself. It's the kind of place that rewards people who are willing to leave the main road and follow a dirt track for a few minutes. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
Getting to Childers Cove
Childers Cove sits between Port Campbell and Peterborough, just off the Great Ocean Road. You turn off onto a short unsealed road and follow it down to a small carpark. From there it's a quick walk down the cliff path to the beach. The path isn't hard but it can be slippery after rain, so wear decent shoes. The cove itself is a sheltered arc of sand framed by those classic Port Campbell limestone cliffs. At low tide, there are rock platforms to explore on either side.
Give yourself at least an hour here. Longer if you're into photography or rock pooling. The light in the late afternoon is something else, especially when it catches the cliffs from the west.
What to Do at Childers Cove
Rock Pooling and Exploring the Platforms
At low tide, the rock platforms at either end of the beach are worth poking around. You'll find sea anemones, small crabs, the usual coastal characters. Kids love it. Adults who pretend they don't care about rock pools end up staying for twenty minutes anyway. Check the tide times before you go and try to arrive an hour or two before low tide.
Swimming and Snorkelling
The cove is reasonably protected from the Southern Ocean swell that batters the rest of this coastline. On calm days, the water is clear enough to snorkel. It's not a patrolled beach so swim within your abilities and keep an eye on the conditions. On rougher days, just watch the waves come in from the cliff path above. Still worth it.
Photography
This is obviously close to my heart. The combination of the limestone archways, the blue water and the relatively small scale of the cove makes it a genuinely interesting location to shoot. I've shot it from the beach, from the cliff path above and from out along the rock platforms. The aerial perspective from the drone is the one I keep coming back to. The clifftop above the cove has enough flat grassy space to spread out a blanket and eat lunch while looking out at the Southern Ocean. Pack something good. It's worth lingering.
What's Nearby on the Great Ocean Road
Childers Cove is perfectly positioned for a full day on this stretch of coast. Port Campbell is about ten minutes east and worth stopping in for coffee or lunch at one of the cafes on the main street. The 12 Apostles are another fifteen minutes east from there. Port Fairy is about an hour west if you want to extend the day in that direction.
