Get Down to the Beach Early
The surf beach at Barwon Heads is the obvious starting point, and for good reason. The sand is clean, the water is that deep Southern Ocean blue, and on a clear morning you get this incredible light hitting the break from the east. I've shot out here dozens of times and the conditions are always doing something different. It's worth getting up before 7am at least once during your stay.
The rock platform at the south end is also worth exploring at low tide. Lots of rock pools, great views back toward the river mouth, and usually a lot quieter than the main beach.
Walk the Bluff
The Barwon Heads Bluff is one of the best short walks on the Bellarine. It takes maybe 20 minutes to walk up and around, but the views from the top over the estuary and the surf beach are genuinely worth it. Sunrise up here is something else. The Barwon River mouth opens up below you and on a still morning the water is glassy all the way across. I've taken my camera up here more times than I can count.

Explore the Barwon River Side
One of the things that makes Barwon Heads different from every other beach town is the estuary. The Barwon River meets the sea right here, and the calm water on the river side is perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or just sitting on the bank watching the pelicans do their thing. Kids love it. The contrast between the wild ocean beach and the calm river is what makes this place special.
There's a boat ramp, a small foreshore reserve, and plenty of spots to set up with a coffee and watch the boats go in and out. It's genuinely lovely.

The main street is small but solid. There are a handful of good cafes, a bakery, and a few local shops worth browsing. Barwon Heads has managed to stay relatively low-key compared to some of the other Bellarine towns, and that's a big part of its appeal. You're not going to be fighting for a table or queuing around the block. It's relaxed, it's friendly, and the food is consistently good.
