Ocean Prints Australia: How to Choose Authentic Coastal Photography for Your Home

Ocean Prints Australia: How to Choose Authentic Coastal Photography for Your Home

I've been photographing Australia's coastline for years now, and the number one question I get asked is: how do I know if I'm buying the real deal or just another generic beach print that could be from anywhere? It's a good question, because when you're bringing the ocean into your home, you want it to actually mean something.

Let me walk you through what makes ocean photography worth hanging on your wall, and how to spot the difference between authentic coastal prints and mass-produced stuff that's been slapped together in bulk.

Look for Prints Shot by the Actual Photographer

This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many "coastal photography" businesses are just reselling stock images. Every print I sell is a photo I've taken myself. I've stood on that cliff, flown that drone, waited for that light. When you grab one of my Point Addis prints, I can tell you exactly what the wind was doing that morning and why the water looks that specific shade of turquoise.

If a website doesn't tell you who took the photo, that's your first red flag. Real photographers are proud of their work and they'll put their name on it.

Choose Places You Actually Know and Love

The best ocean prints are the ones that connect to your own memories. Maybe you had your first surf at Bells Beach, or you've spent every summer holiday at Barwon Heads. That's the stuff that matters when you're looking at it on your wall every day.

I focus on locations I know personally. The Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Great Ocean Road, Gold Coast, Port Douglas. These aren't random pretty beaches. They're places I keep going back to because they've got something special about them. Like Point Roadknight, where the rocks sit in the shallows and the water goes from deep blue to pale aqua in about three metres.

Generic "tropical beach" prints are fine if you just need something blue on the wall. But if you want art that actually means something, go with a place that's part of your story.

Check the Print and Frame Quality

Ocean photography needs to be printed properly or it loses everything that makes it good. The detail in the water, the subtle colour shifts, the sharpness. I print to order here in Victoria, so every print is fresh and the quality stays consistent.

Frames matter too. All my timber frames are FSC certified, which means the wood comes from responsibly managed forests. They're built to last and they won't warp or fade after six months on your wall. You can choose from unframed prints if you've got your own framing sorted, or go with classic frames, canvas, shadow box, or premium shadow box with museum-grade Tru Vue glass.

Cheap frames look cheap. If you're spending money on good photography, don't let it down with a frame that belongs in a budget motel.

Think About Size and Where It's Going

Size is where people often get stuck. Too small and it disappears on the wall. Too big and it overwhelms the room. I offer six sizes, from XS at 21x29.7cm right up to EPIC at 100x150cm (that's 1.5 metres wide, and it absolutely makes a statement).

For a living room feature wall, go M (42x59.4cm) or bigger. For a bedroom or hallway, S or M works well. If you're doing a gallery wall with multiple prints, mix XS and S sizes. And if you've got a big open space that needs something bold, L or XL will do the job. Check out my size guide for actual room examples.

Take the Coast Home

When you hang ocean photography in your home, you're not just decorating. You're bringing in a piece of somewhere that matters to you. Every time I look at my own prints on the wall, I'm back there. I can feel the offshore wind, hear the water moving over the rocks, remember why I love this coastline so much.

That's what good coastal art does. It takes you somewhere, even when you're stuck at home on a Tuesday night.

All my prints ship free anywhere in Australia and they arrive ready to hang. You order it, I print it, and it shows up at your door without you having to do anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size wall art should I get for a living room?

For a living room feature wall, go with M size (42x59.4cm) as a minimum, but L (59.4x84.1cm) or XL (84.1x118.9cm) will have much more impact if you've got the wall space. A good rule is to aim for art that takes up about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of your sofa or the furniture below it. Bigger is almost always better in open living spaces.

How do I know if ocean photography is authentic and not stock imagery?

Check if the photographer's name is clearly shown and if they talk about the specific locations and conditions when they shot the image. Real photographers will tell you the story behind the photo. If the website is vague about who took the photos or just lists generic location names without any personal connection, it's probably stock imagery being resold.

Should I get framed or unframed beach prints?

Get framed if you want it ready to hang straight out of the box and you like the frame options available. Go unframed if you already have a specific frame in mind or you're working with a professional framer. Framed prints cost more upfront but save you the hassle of sourcing and fitting frames yourself, plus you know the frame quality matches the print.

Do ocean prints fade over time?

Quality ocean prints using archival inks and proper paper won't fade for decades if you keep them out of direct sunlight. Hang them on walls that don't cop harsh sun all day, and if you're in a really bright room, consider premium glass options like Tru Vue that offer UV protection. Cheap prints with low-grade inks can start fading within a year or two.
