Jan Juc Wall Art: A Local's Guide to the Surf Coast's Most Underrated Break

Ask most people about the Surf Coast and they'll jump straight to Bells Beach or Torquay. Fair enough. But anyone who's spent real time down here knows that Jan Juc deserves its own conversation. It's got its own character, its own local crew, and honestly some of the best light I've ever shot on the whole stretch of coast.

I'm Sam, a Geelong-based photographer and the person behind every single image at Local Breaks. I've been shooting Jan Juc for years and it never gets old. There's something about that raw, exposed coastline that just photographs beautifully. The reef, the waves, the headlands. It's a place that proper Surf Coast locals hold close, which is exactly why I wanted to give it its own wall art.

Why Jan Juc Doesn't Get Enough Credit

Jan Juc sits just south of Torquay, tucked in before you hit the famous right-handers at Bells. It's a beach break with real personality. The waves are consistent, the crowds are thinner than its neighbours, and the landscape has this rugged quality that I find way more interesting to photograph than a perfect postcard beach.

When I go out to shoot there, I'm not looking for the obvious angles. I'm looking for the moment when the light cuts across the water a certain way, or when a set rolls through and the spray lifts off the back of a wave. That's the stuff that ends up on the wall and actually means something.

The Jan Juc Prints I've Shot

I've got two Jan Juc prints in the shop right now and I'm genuinely proud of both of them.

Jan Juc Art Print I is one of those shots where everything came together. The colour in the water that day was incredible, and the wave formation in the frame has this energy to it that I keep coming back to. Customers who know the break respond to it immediately.

Jan Juc Art Print II takes a different angle on the coastline, with the headland in frame and a wider perspective that shows the full sweep of the bay. It works really well as a larger format print because there's so much going on in the scene.

Both are available from $89, printed to order here in Victoria using giclee archival inks on premium art paper. If you want the full framed experience, the floating frame canvas is my personal favourite for these shots. It uses museum quality 400gsm Hahnemuhle Daguerre canvas and has no glass, which means zero reflections and the colour comes through exactly as I intended it.

Where to Hang Jan Juc Wall Art in Your Home

Jan Juc prints work well in a lot of spaces. Living rooms, hallways, home offices. I've had customers tell me their coastal print is the first thing people comment on when they walk in. One customer said it "has become the centrepiece of our main living area" and another mentioned they're "constantly getting compliments from guests." That's the goal really.

If you're fitting out a beach house or holiday rental on the Surf Coast, a Jan Juc or Bells Beach print gives the space that genuine local feel. Not generic stock imagery. An actual photo of an actual place, shot by someone who knows it. If that's the kind of project you're working on, our post on best wall art for a holiday rental has some useful practical advice.

For sizing, the M (42x59.4cm) is a great starting point for bedrooms and offices. Go L (59.4x84.1cm) or XL (84.1x118.9cm) for living room feature walls. If you want something that really stops people in their tracks, the EPIC format is 100x150cm. That's 1.5m wide. It's a statement.

Take the Coast Home

Jan Juc is one of those places that gets under your skin. If you grew up surfing it, spent summers there, or just drove past it enough times to feel connected to it, having it on your wall is a pretty good feeling. People tell me their prints bring them happiness every day, that they look at them and feel like they're back there. That's what I'm shooting for every time I head out with my camera.

What is Jan Juc wall art?

At Local Breaks, the Jan Juc prints are original photographs shot on location by Geelong photographer Sam Piasente, available as unframed prints, classic framed prints, floating frame canvas prints, and shadow box frames.

What size Jan Juc print should I buy for a living room?

For a living room feature wall, a Large (59.4x84.1cm) or XL (84.1x118.9cm) print makes the most impact. If you have a big empty wall and want something bold, the EPIC size at 100x150cm is 1.5m wide and works as a genuine room centrepiece. Use the Local Breaks size guide to measure up before you order.

What's the difference between a classic frame and a floating frame canvas for surf coast wall art?

A classic frame uses 250gsm premium art paper behind glass, in a solid timber frame available in black, white or oak. A floating frame canvas uses museum quality 400gsm Hahnemuhle Daguerre canvas with no glass at all, which makes it ideal for rooms with natural light because there are no reflections. Both come with a 10-year warranty and FSC certified timber frames. The full breakdown is on the Local Breaks product guide.
