Rainbow Bay sits right at the southern tip of the Gold Coast, tucked between Snapper Rocks and Greenmount. I've spent a fair bit of time here with my camera, and it's one of those places that manages to feel relaxed even when there are people around. The bay curves around perfectly, the water stays clear, and there's always something happening whether you surf or not. It's also just a really easy place to spend a day without overthinking it.
The Beach and Swimming
The beach itself is protected, which means the water stays calm most days. It's one of the better spots on the Gold Coast for a proper swim without getting worked by the shorebreak. Families love it because kids can splash around safely, and the sand stays clean. The bay faces north, so you get sun most of the day, and the headlands on either side keep the wind down. If you're after a morning dip before coffee, this is the spot.

Surfing at Snapper and Greenmount
If the swell is running, you've got two world-class right-handers on either side of you. Snapper Rocks to the south is famous for a reason. When it's on, the wave peels all the way through to Greenmount and beyond. It gets crowded, no question, but if you're up early or patient enough, you'll get waves.
Greenmount is the mellower option. The wave is softer, shorter, and way more forgiving. If you're learning or just want a cruisy session, paddle out at Greenmount. You'll still get plenty of rides without the Snapper crowd breathing down your neck.
The Coastal Walk
One of the best things to do here has nothing to do with getting in the water. The walk from Rainbow Bay to Coolangatta Beach, up over Snapper Rocks and around Point Danger, is one of the most scenic coastal walks you'll do. It takes about 30 minutes if you don't stop, but you will stop. The views back toward the bay, across to Surfers Paradise, and out over the ocean are worth it.
There's also the Captain Cook Memorial and the lighthouse at Point Danger if you're into that sort of thing. But honestly, I'm usually there for the view and maybe a coffee at one of the cafes near Greenmount on the way back.
Coffee and Food
Rainbow Bay Surf Club does a solid breakfast if you want to sit right on the sand. The coffee is decent, the food comes out quick, and you can't beat the location. For something a bit more polished, head up to Greenmount or into Coolangatta. There are plenty of cafes within a five-minute walk.
If you're grabbing lunch, the fish and chips from any of the local spots will do the job. Eat it on the grass at the park overlooking the bay and you've got yourself a proper Gold Coast afternoon.
