Most people race straight past 13th Beach on their way to the Great Ocean Road. Big mistake. This place is one of the best kept secrets on the Bellarine Peninsula, and I reckon it deserves way more love than it gets.
Stretching from Barwon Heads to Breamlea, 13th Beach is six kilometres of pure surf coast gold. The sand goes on forever, the waves are consistent, and on the right day, you'll feel like you've got the whole place to yourself.
Why I Keep Coming Back
I've shot this coastline dozens of times, and it never disappoints. The light here does something special in the late afternoon. Those warm peachy tones spill across the sand and make everything glow. You can see what I mean in my Barwon Heads Art Print I, where a couple strolls along the beach with their dog as the sun dips low.
Unlike the more famous spots down the coast, 13th Beach has this relaxed vibe that's hard to find these days. Sure, it gets busy in summer, but there's so much space that it never feels crowded. Even on Boxing Day you can find your own patch of sand.
The Surf Scene
Here's the thing about 13th Beach. It's a proper surf break. The main beach picks up swell from almost any direction, which means you're rarely left high and dry. I've watched surfers out here in everything from gentle two footers to solid overhead sets.
The beach faces south, so it cops the full force of Southern Ocean swells. When a decent swell runs, the place lights up. You'll see everyone from grommets learning their first cutback to old salts who've been surfing here for forty years.
If you're just learning, stick to the eastern end near Barwon Heads. The waves are a bit more forgiving there. More experienced surfers head west towards Breamlea where the banks can throw up some serious barrels.
More Than Just Waves
Not a surfer? No worries. This place works for everyone. The hard packed sand at low tide is perfect for long beach walks. I've done the full six kilometre stretch more times than I can count, and it's brilliant for clearing your head.
Dog owners love it here too. The eastern section allows off leash dogs year round, and you'll always see happy pups charging through the shallows. That's actually how I got the shot for my Barwon Heads print. Just waited for the right moment when this couple and their dog walked into frame.
The rock pools at low tide are great for kids. They can poke around looking for crabs and tiny fish while you actually relax for five minutes. Revolutionary concept, I know.
Getting There
From Geelong, it's about a twenty minute drive. Head through Barwon Heads and follow the signs to 13th Beach. There's parking along Thirteenth Beach Road, with the main car park at the surf club.
Fair warning though. That car park fills up fast on summer weekends. Get there early or be prepared to park further along the road and walk in. It's worth it.
Best Time to Visit
I'm biased towards late afternoon for the light, but honestly, any time works. Early morning in winter is magic. The beach is empty, the air is crisp, and if you're lucky you might see dolphins cruising past.
Summer obviously brings the crowds, but also brings those long warm evenings where you can stay until sunset and beyond. Autumn might be my favourite though. The weather's still decent, the water hasn't turned freezing yet, and the tourists have gone home.
Why It's Called 13th Beach
Quick history lesson. Back in the day, surveyors numbered the beaches along this stretch of coast. This one got lucky number thirteen. Not the most creative name, but at least you know what you're getting.
Some locals call it Thirteenth Beach or just Thirteens. Same place, different name. Don't stress about it.
